Technology and Learning

Technology helps learners access the curriculum while we continue to develop the academic skills they need.

Technology as a Bridge to Learning
Technology is an important part of our approach at The Gift School.

For some learners, there can be a significant gap between what they understand and what they are able to read, spell or write independently.

A learner may have excellent ideas and a strong understanding of a topic, but struggle to get those ideas onto paper because so much of their mental energy is being used to manage spelling, handwriting or written language.

The computer can help bridge that gap.

Using technology can allow a learner to:

  • Have text read aloud
  • Listen to digital learning material
  • Speech-to-text rather than rely entirely on handwriting
  • Use spelling support
  • Make notes
  • Organise information
  • Access classroom resources
  • Complete work through Google Classroom
  • Demonstrate their understanding more effectively

This does not mean that technology replaces teaching or learning.

Technology is a tool.

It gives learners greater access to the curriculum while we continue to develop the underlying academic skills they need.

For many of our learners, technology also helps reduce the pressure created by reading, spelling and writing difficulties. This allows them to focus more of their attention on what they think and understand, rather than on the mechanics of getting their ideas onto paper.
